Migrants, which are highly preferred in the packaging industry and can be transmitted from foodstuffs, which are widely used, to foodstuffs are: monomers, solvents, catalysts, reaction products and additives.

As a result of the migration between the packaging material and the foodstuff inside, the foodstuff starts to deteriorate, loss of quality occurs and the properties of the packaging material change. Therefore, the issue of migration in the food industry is extremely important. Food establishments have to choose the appropriate packaging material for their products and keep it in suitable conditions. Because it is not possible to consume food in the place where it is produced and in a short time. Foodstuffs should be stored, transported and presented to consumers in appropriate packaging and in appropriate conditions as they are shipped from the enterprises at different distances and at different times. Food packaging processes are part of important food production processes that ensure that foodstuffs reach consumers in reliable conditions.

Food packaging mainly affects the shelf life of foodstuffs. Therefore, different packaging materials should be used for different food products. Foods must maintain quality and freshness throughout their shelf life.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock has issued the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Plastic Materials and Materials in Contact with Food (Communiqué no: 2013 / 2013) in relation to plastic materials that may come into contact with food or that may be in contact with food. In the annexes of this communiqué, among the basic rules of total and specific migration tests, the use of rectified olive oil or other vegetable oil simulant is permitted for the determination of migration amounts of some plastic packaging materials used in the packaging of fatty foods.

In the advanced laboratories, total migration analysis is carried out using vegetable oil simulant within the scope of packaging analysis. During these studies, standards and test methods published by national and international organizations are based.
