GMO Screening Test
GMO Screening Test

Scientists supporting genetically modified organism studies generally argue that these studies are important for natural plant breeding. However, in nature, living things develop according to their life forms and pass on their genes to future generations. In European countries, 10 has been consuming genetically modified foods for more than a year. However, this is not enough to rely on such food. It is observed that when GMO foods are consumed, they show different symptoms compared to normal diseases. For example, some severely progressive diseases progress faster. There is not enough time to fully determine the effects of genetically modified food on human health.

In order to take precautions against the unknown, some measures are being taken in the European Union countries and in our country. The Regulation on Genetically Modified Organisms and Products was issued by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock in 2010. With this regulation, it is aimed to prevent risks arising from GMO products obtained by using modern biotechnology methods, to protect human, animal and plant health and to protect environment and biodiversity with technological and scientific developments. This regulation includes principles for evaluation, monitoring, placing on the market and inspections of genetically modified foods for food and feed purposes, as well as for research, development and experimental activities related to genetically modified foods.

GMO screening tests are carried out in advanced laboratories within the scope of GMO analysis. These tests are based on standards published by local and foreign organizations. A few standards to consider are:

  • TS EN ISO 24276 Foods - Analysis methods for the detection of genetically modified organisms and their derivatives - Definitions and general rules
  • TS EN ISO 21569 Foodstuffs - Analysis methods for the detection of genetically modified organisms and derivative products - Quality of nucleic acid based methods
