Breathable Dust Exposure Measurement

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security issued the Anti-Dust Regulation in 2013. With this regulation, it is aimed to prevent dust risks in workplaces. The regulation includes measures to combat dust in terms of occupational health and safety and to ensure that workers are protected from the harmful effects of dust.

In the annex of the said regulation, the Powder Occupational Exposure Limit Values Table is given (Annex 1). This table shows the limit values for the total dust quantity and the respirable dust amount for each of the powder parameters.

Depending on the characteristics of their activities and the amount of dust generated, enterprises must prevent dust formation in the workplace, destroy the dust at the source before spreading to the work environment or reduce the dust density by the methods shown in this table.

Breathable dust exposure measurements are also performed by authorized laboratories within the scope of personal exposure measurements. In these studies, besides the dust analysis methods accepted in the field of occupational hygiene, the following standards are also complied with:

  • HSE / MDHS 14 / 3 General methods for sampling and gravimetric analysis of respirable and inhalable dust
  • NIOSH NMAM 0500 Particulates not otherwise regulated, total (personal exposure total dust measurement)
  • NIOSH NMAM 0600 Particulates not otherwise regulated, respirable
  • ASTM D 4532 Standard test method for respirable dust in workplace atmospheres using cyclone samplers

The Regulation stipulates that the laboratories that will carry out these measurements must have a prequalification or qualification certificate issued by the General Directorate of Occupational Health and Safety. In addition, these laboratories must be accredited from a national or international accreditation body in accordance with the standard of TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories.
