Sea Water Analysis

The seas are polluting. And it gets dirty at an incredible speed. The main sources of this general marine pollution are:

  • Residential areas and industrial facilities established by the sea
  • Pipelines passing through the seas and plaforms for various purposes
  • Ships deliberately or unintentionally leaving their waste irresponsibly in the sea
  • In particular, vessels carrying fuel or waste and accident
  • Airway vehicles

Our country is located in the center of an important maritime traffic. The only connection between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea is through the straits. This heavy maritime traffic creates serious risks in terms of natural environment and human health, especially in areas with dense construction.

Some of these ships leave their waste and litter such as bilge and balasat into the sea. In addition, some vessels carry dangerous cargoes or wastes by legal or illegal means and in case of an accident, oil or other harmful wastes may be discharged into the sea. Such cargoes are subject to international conventions to prevent marine pollution. For example, petroleum and petroleum-derived substances, toxic liquids, packaged harmful substances, sewage and litter are major marine pollutants.

The mixing of all kinds of harmful substances and wastes into the sea is extremely important in terms of destroying the vital functions of living organisms in the sea.

Let's just remember the sea accidents in the Bosphorus. In 1979, more than one thousand tons of crude oil was spilled into the sea in the Independenta accident. In 100, a thousand tonnes of ammonia gas from the Blue Star ship flowed into the sea. In 1988, Jambur-Datongsham crash spread 1990 ton gazoil into the sea. In 2.600, 1991 shed a thousand live animals in the sea. In 20, 1994 thousand tons of crude oil spread to the sea.

The waste water left by the enterprises in the settlements on the coast of the sea is another great danger to the pollution of the seas.

The Regulation on Water Pollution Control issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2004 also covers the principles for the protection of the seas. Within this scope, all discharges polluting the seas are completely prohibited.

In the territorial waters of our country, it is forbidden to dispose of garbage, petroleum and petroleum derivatives as well as dishwashing bilge water, dirty ballast water and similar solid and liquid wastes and all kinds of cargo residues. Such waste must be delivered to licensed waste reception facilities or waste reception vessels. All ships are subject to the provisions of Annex 1990 of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution by Ships published in 4.

In the table attached to the Regulation on Water Pollution Control, the general quality criteria of sea water are explained (Table 4). Here are the limit values that should be under the following headings:

  • pH value (from 6.0 to 9.0)
  • Color and blur (natural)
  • Floating matter (no solids such as oil, tar and such liquids and rubbish)
  • Suspended solids (30 mg / L)
  • Dissolved oxygen (more than 90 percent of saturation)
  • Degradable organic pollutants
  • Crude oil and petroleum derivatives (0.003 mg / L)
  • Radioactivity (must be at natural levels)
  • Productivity (seasonal productivity levels should be maintained)
  • Toxicity (should not be present)
  • Phenols (0.001 mg / L)
  • Copper (0.01 mg / L)
  • Cadmium (0.01 mg / L)
  • Chromium (0.1 mg / L)
  • Lead (0.1 mg / L)
  • Nickel (0.1 mg / L)
  • Zinc (0.1 mg / L)
  • Mercury (0.004 mg / L)
  • Arsenic (0.1 mg / L)
  • Ammonia (0.02 mg / L)

Sea water analyzes are carried out in authorized laboratories within the framework of legal regulations and standards taken by domestic and foreign institutions. The main standards considered in sea water analysis are:

  • TS ISO 5667-9 Water quality - Sampling - Section 9: Marine water sampling guide
  • TS EN ISO 5667-3 Water quality - Sampling - Section 3: Guidelines for the storage, transport and storage of water samples

Sea water analyzes are carried out by the Provincial Directorates of the Ministry of Health.
