Textile Flooring - Combustion Character - Environmental Temperature Tablet Test

There are many features in the evaluation of flame retardancy or late flammability in textile products. Many test methods developed based on the type of material, combustion behavior, material formation, surface structure, flame outlet source and many variables are included in published standards. The most commonly used standards are:

  • Vertical combustion test, vertical combustion test for pile and lint-free flooring, horizontal combustion test, 45 degree inclined combustion test, depending on the material's location
  • Depending on the source of combustion, smoking test method, butangaz test
  • LOI (Limited Oxygen Index) test to determine the amount of oxygen required for combustion
  • Toxicity test for the determination of toxicity during combustion

There are also other flame retardancy tests developed by various organizations in various countries. In all, however, the common point is the combustion time after the ignition source has been removed, the internal combustion time after the end of the flame combustion, the rate of progress of combustion and the release of gas or smoke.

Accredited laboratories also perform tablet tests at ambient temperature to determine the burning character of textile floor coverings within the scope of flammability tests. Laboratories comply with the following standards:

  • ISO 6925 Textile floor coverings - Combustion behavior - Tablet test at ambient temperature
  • BS 6307 Method for determining the effects of a small ignition source on textile floor coverings
  • TS 5193 Textile floor coverings - Combustion character - Tablet test at ambient temperature

This method applies to all types of textile flooring, regardless of their construction or fiber composition. The method can also be applied to unfinished materials. This standard is intended to determine the burning character of textile floor coverings when exposed to a small flame source under controlled laboratory conditions when in a horizontal position.
