IP Protection Tests

The IP code or Ingress Portection code is defined in the international standard EN 60529. This standard has been prepared by the European Electrotechnical Standardization Committee (CENELEC). This standard, which is a European standard, has been published in our country by Turkish Standards Institute with the following title:

  • TS 3033 EN 60529 The degree of protection provided by enclosures (IP code) (in electrical equipment)

The IP code is used to identify the level of protection of various electrical or electronic devices and equipment against dust, dirt, wetness and impact. These levels are determined by tests and are placed on the devices and equipments in order to inform the consumers.

What are IP Codes?

The IP code consists of two digits. The first number indicates the level of protection of the device against solid objects and the second number indicates the level of protection against liquids. The higher the number the higher the level of protection means the stronger it is.

Laptops, tablets, mobile phones and all kinds of electrical devices and equipments are designed by test and inspection organizations to ensure proper protection against the environment in harsh environments.

The IP codes considered during these tests are:

  • Degree of protection against solid objects (first number):
    • 0 = No protection
    • 1 = Protection up to 50 mm2 (touch by hand)
    • 2 = Protection up to 12 mm2 (touch with fingers)
    • 3 = 2,5 Protection up to mm2 (touch with a tool, wire or cable)
    • 4 = 1 Protection up to mm2 (touch with a tool, wire or cable)
    • 5 = Limited protection against dust (no dust accumulation)
    • 6 = Fully protected against dust
  • Degree of protection against liquids (second number):
    • 0 = No protection
    • 1 = Protection against vertically dripping water
    • 2 = 15 protection from incoming water with a vertical angle
    • 3 = 60 protection from incoming water with a vertical angle
    • 4 = Protection from all directions of water (limited protection)
    • 5 = Protection against low pressure water from all directions (limited protection)
    • 6 = Protection against high pressure water
    • 7 = 15 minute protection against water between 1 cm and 30 m
    • 8 = Protection against prolonged immersion

Although the IP codes in question are generally two digits, they are actually three digits. The third figure indicates the level of protection of electrical and electronic equipment and equipment housings against mechanical factors. However, this third figure is not included in the IEC 60529 standard and is not used much.

The levels of protection against mechanical factors are as follows (third figure):

    • 0 = No protection
    • 1 = 0,225 protection against a mechanical force of joule force
    • 2 = 0,375 protection against a mechanical force of joule force
    • 3 = 0,5 protection against a mechanical force of joule force
    • 4 = 2 protection against a mechanical force of joule force
    • 5 = 6 protection against a mechanical force of joule force
    • 6 = 20 protection against a mechanical force of joule force

IP codes are designed to classify the levels of protection provided by the enclosures of electrical and electronic equipment and equipment. This coding is explained to consumers about how much protection these equipments provide in case of undesired situations. The numbers in the IP code represent the enclosure's ability to protect

For example, if an equipment has an IP53 code on its enclosure, it means:

  • It provides limited protection against dust accumulation.
  • 60 is capable of protecting against water coming at a vertical angle.

Another example is the IP67 code, for example seen on mobile phones. According to this code, the mobile phone can withstand fully dust penetration (6) and withstand a maximum depth of 1 meters at a depth of 30 meters (7). This means that it does not provide complete waterproofing.

In short, the IP code provides consumer safety for these products while expressing the performance and robustness of these products.
