Assessment of Flammability of Bedding Materials - Ignition Source, Smoldering Cigarette

Generally, flame retardant fabrics are used in workwear and overalls, motorcycle garments, insulation materials, carpets and curtains, uniforms, tents and tarpaulins and auto upholstery. One of the most important uses of flame retardant fabrics is upholstery fabrics and bedding materials. In particular, the late ignition properties of the bed materials significantly reduce the risk of fire in people's homes with smoking habits.

Beds, bedspreads, bed linen, pillows and many other bed stuff falling on it and still smoldering for a cigarette means a serious fire hazard.

Many laboratories are accredited under the TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. For this reason, all the tests they perform and all the reports they prepare are fast, high quality and reliable.

In addition, these laboratories comply with the standards published by national or international organizations in the test studies. In the evaluation of the flammability of the bed materials made within the scope of furniture tests, if the cigarette is a burning cigarette for the ignition source, the laboratories are based on the following standards:

  • ISO 12952-1 Textiles - Assessment of flammability of bedding materials - Part 1: Source of fire: Burning cigarette
  • TS EN ISO 12952-1 Combustion behavior of textile bedding - Part 1: Ignition source: Quenched cigarette

This standard describes test methods for assessing the flammability of all bedding if any bedding material is subjected to a burning cigarette. This standard generally applies to bedding placed on a mattress. In this context, for example, mattress covers, under covers, sheets, blankets, electric blankets, duvets and bedspreads, pillows of all types and pillowcases are tested in accordance with this standard. However, materials such as mattresses and mattress bases are outside this standard.
