Combustion Properties of Textile and Textile Products - Curtains - Classification Chart

In recent years, attention has been paid to using fabrics woven from flammable fibers in many areas that require high heat and flame protection. For this purpose, flame retardant or late flame retardant fabrics have started to be produced in textile sector.

The main purpose of the efforts to obtain flammable products in the textile sector is to prevent combustion. But, of course, textile products should not be limited to human movements, light, comfortable and compact effects should be strong, repeated washing, drying and dry cleaning, durable, long-lasting, but above all, environmentally friendly. In addition to these, the expected properties of flammable fabrics include the lack of toxicity and the high cost. The studies in the textile sector focus on product development to meet all these expectations.

In this context, a classification scheme for curtains has been developed while determining the combustion properties of textiles and textile products. The BS 5867-2 standard describes performance levels based on a number of tests and specific methods. This standard describes fabrics to be used in curtain construction in three levels: levels A, B and C. The requirements for fabrics at level A are somewhat challenging. The requirements for fabrics at level C are quite difficult.

Tests are carried out by authorized laboratories for the classification of curtains in terms of combustion properties of textile products and these standards are complied with in these tests:

  • BS EN 13773 Textiles and textile products - Combustion behavior - Curtains and drapes - Classification scheme
  • BS 5867-2 Fabrics for curtains, blinds and window blinds - Part 2: Combustion requirements - Specifications
  • TS EN 13773 Textiles and textile products - Combustion properties - Curtains - Classification scheme
