Combustion Requirements for Drapery, Draperies and Window Blinds

Fires in buildings usually start due to open fires such as burning cigarettes, candles or other intense heat sources. The curtains, which are a vertically suspended textile product, are highly suitable for easy climbing of flames. The flammability properties of the fabrics are different. Some fabrics can burn easily, while others burn late. In the textile sector, a number of chemical substances are applied to non-flammable fabrics in order to provide flammability resistance. Fabrics treated in this manner are generally referred to as flame retardant fabrics. Flame retardant finishing processes are performed to increase the resistance to ignition and to reduce the spread rate of the flame on the surface in the event of ignition.

The BS 5867-2 standard, published in the UK, shows performance levels based on a number of tests and specific methods. This standard takes the fabrics used in curtain production into three levels: A, B and C levels. The requirements set for level A fabrics are somewhat challenging. The requirements for C-level fabrics are quite difficult. For each level, a cleaning procedure is performed, depending on the severity of the actual firing test, before starting the testing of the fabrics. This is because the fire retardant property of the screen is maintained as long as it is used.

The principle of these test methods is to apply a small gas flame to a vertically suspended part of the curtain fabric for a certain period of time (5 to 30 seconds) and to evaluate how the fabric behaves.

Tests are carried out by authorized laboratories to determine combustion requirements for drapery, drapes and window blinds. These tests comply with the following standards:

  • BS 5867-2 Fabrics for curtains, drapes and window blinds - Part 2: Combustion requirements - Specifications (Type A, Type B Type C 50 washing)
  • BS EN ISO 6941 Textile fabrics - Combustion behavior - Measurement of flame propagation of vertically oriented samples
