Determination of Combustion Behavior of Internal Materials in Motor Vehicles

Many textile products are used in the internal structures of motor vehicles. The various combustion behavior of these materials, such as flammability, horizontal or vertical combustion rate and melting behavior, must comply with ECE R 118 regulations.

In addition, materials used in the internal structures of motor vehicles carrying more than 22 passengers in our country and European countries must be tested according to ECE R 118 regulations.

In the European Union countries, the Regulation on Type Approval Regarding the Combustion Behavior of Materials Used in the Internal Structures of Certain Classes of Motor Vehicles is in force, 95 / 28 / AT.

In this regard, the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology has issued a Communiqué on the Application Procedures and Principles of the Type Approval Regulation (661 / 2009 / EC) on the General Safety of Motor Vehicles and Trailers, Systems, Components and Separate Technical Units . All companies that prioritize safety of life must use materials in accordance with this directive in their internal structures.

The ECE R 118 regulations deal with textiles used in the interior of vehicles under three headings:

  • Horizontal combustion rate determination of materials (Annex 6)
  • Assay to determine the melting behavior of materials (Annex 7)
  • Determination of vertical combustion rate of materials (Annex 8)

Authorized laboratories also perform the combustion behavior tests of internal materials used in motor vehicles within the scope of flammability tests. Laboratories comply with the following standards during these tests:

  • DIN 75200 Combustion test for motor vehicles
  • ECE R 118 Motor Vehicles - Combustion Behavior of Materials Used in the Internal Structure of Certain Motor Vehicle Categories

These standards apply to test methods for materials used in passenger compartments of motor vehicles, in side walls including doors, kitchens, toilets, doors, ceilings, floor, exterior windows, rear seat planes and in the front compartments, and in places reserved for passenger use.
