These flame retardant fabrics are also called non-flammable fabrics. These fabrics are more resistant to ignition, combustion or flame in their structure. This non-flammability is given to fabrics either with yarns made of non-combustible fibers or during final finishing.

One of the biggest dangers for smokers is smoking in the bedroom and going to sleep before the cigarette is fully extinguished. In such cases it is very likely that the bed will ignite due to cigarettes falling on the bed and still smoldering. In order to prevent such risks, textile manufacturers add properties to prevent flammability and burning of bed bases and bearings.

This standard specifies a test method for determining the flammability when the beds, mattress pads and furnished mattress bases are exposed to a smoldering cigarette as a combustion source.
