Traditional methods for imparting flame retardancy to fabrics or yarns unfortunately cause a number of problems in terms of human health and environmental conditions due to the structure of the chemicals used, their resistance to washing processes and the effects they cause. For this reason, recent studies have focused on the fact that the power ignition processes are resistant to washing, and that the chemicals that provide it have no toxic effects. In addition, the use of flame retardant which prevents melting and dripping is preferred for fabrics woven with fusible fibers such as polyamide and polyester.

These studies mainly focused on the following three methods: surface modification by plasma treatment, nanotechnology and microcapsule applications. Naturally, the results of these studies are also used in the textile industry to increase the fire resistance of small carpets and rugs. As it is known, during the first intervention to a fire, throwing small carpets and rugs on the fire is an important intervention. Therefore, it is an important feature that they are flammable.

Laboratories accredited by national or international accreditation organizations carry out various tests to determine the surface flammability of small carpets and rugs within the scope of fireproof tests. Laboratories meet the following standards during these tests:

·         16 CFR Part 1631 Standard for surface flammability of small carpets and rugs

This standard is a test method designed to detect surface flammability when small carpets and rugs are exposed to a small source of fire under normal protection conditions. This test method applies to all types of small carpets and rugs which are used as floor coverings, irrespective of the production method, regardless of peanut or synthetic fibers, films, combinations thereof or their substitution.

CFR (The Code of Federal Regulations) refers to US legal regulations.
