Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards Internal Materials Flammability

FMVSS 302 standard, which is one of the Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards, covers the fire resistance requirements of textile products used in passenger cabin of motor vehicles. The purpose of this standard is to prevent vehicle fires, in particular fires inside the vehicle from sources such as matches or cigarettes resulting in death and injury. This standard applies to passenger cars, multipurpose passenger cars, trucks and buses.

The FMVSS 302 standard in itself is supported by many standards. Here are a few of them:

  • SAE J369 Flammability of polymeric internal materials - Horizontal test method
  • TL1010 Flammability in vehicle interiors
  • ISO 3795 Road vehicles and tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry - Determination of combustion behavior of indoor materials
  • DIN 75200 Determination of combustion behavior of internal materials of motor vehicles
  • 95 / 28 / EC Motor vehicles fire test directive
  • UTAC 18-502 Determining the melting behavior of materials used in the construction of motor vehicles

All of these tests are mainly intended to determine the horizontal combustion strength of textile products used in the construction of motor vehicles, for example flooring, seats, side walls and partitions, or the melting behavior of materials used on the ceiling, or the vertical firing rate of the curtains used in such vehicles.

Authorized laboratories conduct flammability testing of internal materials within the framework of the Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standard as part of the fire resistance tests. Laboratories comply with the following standards during these tests:

  • FMVSS 302 Flammability of materials used in passenger compartments of motor vehicles

This standard is used to determine the fire resistance of textiles used in passenger cabin of motor vehicles. It is applied to cars, buses, minibuses and similar public transportation vehicles and trucks. Seats, backrests, cushions, seat belts, headrests, armrests, sun visors, side panels, floor coverings, curtains and all similar materials in the vehicle must pass this test.
