The ready-to-wear sector in our country gained momentum with the export-oriented development policy, which was initiated in 1980. Today, the existing capacities of enterprises are much higher than the domestic demand, and the textile and apparel sector is heavily export-oriented. In a short time, our country's ready-to-wear sector has become the sixth largest ready-to-wear exporter in the world. Our exports to European Union countries are second only to China. The garment sector is the driving force of our country's economy in terms of production and employment.

Most of the garment products are cotton products. 65 percent of the production is exported. 80 percent of the exported textile products consists of cotton products. Our country ranks fourth in the world cotton consumption. It ranks third behind India and Syria in organic cotton production.

For textile products, especially developed countries, there are many different approaches and developments in the fields of quality, health, environment and so on, as a result of this, many legal regulations are issued and many new standards are established.

As a result of the developments in the environment and health in the European Union countries, which is the biggest market in ready-to-wear, environmental label application has been developed. Companies in our country have to keep up with these developments in order to maintain their competitive power and not to lose their market shares.

Therefore, tests for garment and garment products are of great importance. In this context, enterprises are trying to comply with the regulations, criteria, methods and standards related to the environment and health that are put into practice. As an example only, the production, use and import of azo dyes in our country are subject to certain limitations and the use of certain amines in the manufacture of dyes is prohibited.
