Leather Washing fastness determination

Determination of Fastness to Skin Wash
Determination of Fastness to Skin Wash

The determination of washing fastness in leather products is carried out in order to determine whether these products have lost their color after the washing process, how much color they have changed and how much they have contaminated other textile products during the washing process.

Leather products are generally not washed with water. Dry cleaning is recommended. Leather clothing is deformed if washed with water. In this case, many of the physical properties expected from the skin are lost and the skin loses its use. Since the skin is fiber-free and organic, it should not be exposed to hot water or spraying. However, it is inevitable that it gets wet in the rain. At this point, the skin must show a certain resistance to water.

Tests are performed by authorized laboratories to determine the wash fastness of the skin within the scope of specific tests. The standards used in these tests are as follows:

  • TS EN ISO 15702 Leather - Color fastness tests - Color fastness to machine wash

This standard specifies a method for assessing the tendency of paint and pigments to penetrate from a leather to a synthetic material in detecting color penetration into the white PVC sheet in contact with the skin. This method is also suitable for assessing changes in skin color, contamination of an accompanying gland and any other conditions that may occur in skin apres- sion.

  • TS EN ISO 15703 Skin - Color fastness tests - Color fastness to washing under mild conditions

This standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of the skin to wash under temperate conditions and under certain conditions. This method is also suitable for assessing changes in skin color, contamination of an accompanying gland and any other conditions that may occur in skin apres- sion.

  • ISO 15703 (IULTCS / IUF 423) Skin - Color fastness tests - Color fastness to light destruction
