Leather O-phenylphenol determination

Determination of O-Phenylphenol in Skin
Determination of O-Phenylphenol in Skin

O-phenylphenol, a high-molecular phenol, is also used in the dyeing process of leather products in the textile sector. However, this chemical compound is harmful to human health and it is important to determine what amount is used in leather products.

O-phenylphenol is most commonly used as a fungicide for disinfectant production and antiseptic applications.

The O-phenylphenol compound is in the form of white crystals and is present in the form of a mixture of granules or powder in the air, which presents an explosion hazard due to the easy ignition of the powder. Reacts with strong oxidants and strong bases. It enters the body by inhalation. Dust particles in the air are harmful. If it enters the body, it may affect the circulatory and digestive systems, kidneys and lungs. It causes respiratory failure and tissue loss.

Due to the lack of full knowledge of other effects on human health, the necessary precautions should be taken for those working with the o-phenylphenol compound or for users of used leather and other textile products.

Instead of conventional active substances, in particular chlorinated aromatic compounds, o-phenylphenol, biphenyl and other aromatic hydrocarbons, especially those used in dyeing, other less hazardous compounds should be used. In the leather sector, dyeing processes are carried out by carrier method and o-phenylphenol is frequently used in this method.

Accredited laboratories carry out tests and analyzes to determine the amount of o-phenylphenol in the skin within the scope of specific tests. These studies are based on standards published by domestic and foreign organizations. The standards to determine the amount of o-phenylphenol in the skin are:

  • TS EN ISO 17070 Leather - Chemical experiments - Determination of tetrachlorophenol (TECP), trichlorophenol (TCP), dichlorophenol (DCP) and monochlorophenol (MCP) isomers and pentachlorophenol (PCP) content
  • ISO 17070 (IULTCS / IUC 25) Skin - Chemical tests - Determination of pentachlorophenol content
  • DIN 53313 Skin test - Determination of pentachlorphenol (PCP) content
