Leather Rupture strength ve Elongation determination

Tensile Strength and Elongation Determination of Skin
Tensile Strength and Elongation Determination of Skin

The characteristic of the skin is its stretching or elongation against small stresses. Under the heavy load of a force to be applied and acting continuously, the skin shows a strong strength. This feature of the leather is due to the three-dimensional lattice of the fiber structure and the texture of the layer. Any possible change in skin fibers affects the strength of the skin.

The data obtained from the strength tests show the condition and usability of textiles made from leather. Rupture, tear or rod tear tests are based on the different stresses of the skin during the tests. All three strength tests are necessary tests and values are determined according to the type of leather tested.

Determination of tensile strength is important in all leather types. Tear strength tests are more suitable for soft and flexible leather types. On the other hand, the tear strength of the rod is important in the full and hard leather types such as leather and strap.

Tensile and tear strength test values generally do not have a parallel. In determining the tensile strength, the gripping force is evenly distributed over the entire cross-section of the skin. In this way, the fiber tissue of the skin is grasped as a whole. When determining the tear strength, the force is applied to the tear in the form of a spot. In this case, the fibers are torn apart.

When determining the properties of the leather, it is not sufficient to know only the strength values. The total behavior of the skin is always important when applying force during tests. The main role is played by the fiber tissue of the skin.

Tests are performed by authorized laboratories to determine the strength and elongation of skin rupture within the scope of specific tests. The standards used in these tests are as follows:

  • TS 236 Physical inspection methods of finished leathers and leather

This standard covers the physical inspection methods of all finished leathers and leather. Only physical examination methods of raw hides are outside this standard.

  • ISO 3376 (IULTCS / IUP 6) Leather - Physical and mechanical tests - Determination of tensile strength and percent extension
