Determination of Anti Bacterial Activity
Determination of Anti Bacterial Activity

It has been known for a long time that microorganisms grow and develop on textile products. In the past, antibacterial applications applied to textile products were mostly done to prevent economic losses caused by molds. These applications date back to the seventeenth century, when the textile products used in shipping were treated with iron salts. However, in the present sense, the first applications were made during the second world war when military tents and military textile products became unavailable due to microorganisms. However, since the first applications were mainly made to protect textile products, toxic properties for human health were not taken into consideration.

Antibacterial finishing processes have become more and more important in textile products. Skin disorders caused by fungi and bad odors produced by bacteria were effective in this.

Anti-bacterial activity determination studies are carried out in authorized laboratories within the scope of microbiology tests. Laboratories are accredited in accordance with TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 standard in order to prove their reliability and impartiality in these studies. It also complies with the standards published by domestic and foreign organizations. The standards for the determination of antibacterial activity are as follows:

·         AATCC 147 (Qualitative) Antibacterial activity of fabrics, evaluation of textile materials: parallel transition method

·         AATCC 174 (Quantitative) Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of carpets

·         AATCC 100 (Quantitative) Evaluation of antibacterial treatments on textile materials

·         ASTM E2149 (Quantitative) Standard test method for determining the antimicrobial activity of antimicrobials under dynamic contact conditions

·         ASTM E2180 (Quantitative) Standard test method for determining antimicrobial activity in polymeric or hydrophobic materials

·         ISO 20645 (Qualitative) Textile fabrics - Determination of antibacterial activity - Agar diffusion plate test

·         ISO 22196 (Quantitative) Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastic and nonporous surfaces

·         TS EN ISO 20743 Textile - Determination of antibacterial activity in antibacterial finish fabrics

·         JIS L 1902 (Quantitative) Antimicrobial fabric test
