Phthalates or phthalate esters are used to make plastics flexible in making polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These esters have low solubility in water and high solubility in oil. Hard plastic materials with phthalate are transformed into a soft and more flexible plastic material that can be processed more easily.

In the textile industry, many chemicals are used to soften plastics. However, phthalates are not very innocent in terms of human health. In fact, there are chemical softeners that do not harm human health, but their costs are high. For this reason, businesses have preferred to use harmful but inexpensive phthalate until recent years.

Phthalates, which have been proven to be harmful by various investigations, are now banned. In this regard, both domestic producers and importer companies are strictly audited by official institutions.

Plastic is used in all areas of life today. These products have a distinctive odor, but certain chemical tests are required in laboratories to ensure that it is true. Such chemicals are used in toys, shoes, shopping bags, personal care and cosmetic products, upholstery and decoration products, gloves, detergents, stationery products, and even baby tools and supplies.

The Regulation on Restrictions on the Production, Supply and Use of Certain Dangerous Substances, Preparations and Articles issued in 2008 restricts the use of phthalate up to 1. If phthalates are consumed above 0.25 milligrams per day, they damage growth and development hormones and cause heart disease and obesity.

In order to provide reliable products to consumers, it is important to determine the amount of phthalate in textile products. These studies are carried out by authorized laboratories and are based on the following standards:

·  TS EN ISO 17076-2 Leather - Determination of abrasion resistance - Part 2: Martindale ball plate method

·  TS EN 15777 Textile - Test method for phthalates

·  Standard working method for the determination of phthalates CPSC-CH-C1001-09.2
