Textile fabrics Drape determination

Determination of Textile Fabrics
Determination of Textile Fabrics

In the textile industry, more objective measurement techniques have been developed in parallel with the technology and significant progress has been made in measuring the aesthetic attitudes of the fabrics. The draping and bending properties of fabrics are the main parameters that affect the choice, design and appearance of textile materials when evaluated in terms of fabric comfort.

Drapery is one of the important features that affect the appearance of the fabric. In simple terms, it can be said that the fabric is the deformation behavior under its own weight. It is the most important criterion about how the fabric will look during use.

The drape of a fabric is related to how it gets on the body after sewing as a garment, how it wraps around the body, how it stands, the shape of the fabric, the pattern, the ruffle, the break or the shape of the pleat.

Essentially all fabrics have their own casting. Cotton fibers, silk or viscose fabrics have a beautiful drape. It relates to the drape, density, softness and weight of the fabric.

A number of softening agents used during the finishing processes of the fabric also give the fabric drapability. For example, silicone finishing agents are excellent in this regard. The fabric gains a fuller softness. However, the effect obtained when cationic softening agents are used varies depending on how much the fabric is used. These materials give the fabric only an excessive softness without giving fullness.

In order to ensure the width and length stability of the fabric, that is to put the fabric into the shape it will take after many washes, the process of ironing by opening the creases is called sanforizing process. This process is very important in terms of improving the final attitude of the fabric and making the fabric drapery.

For physical tests performed in accredited laboratories, standards issued by local and foreign organizations are complied with. In this context, the following standard is taken into consideration for tests to determine the drapability of textile fabrics: TS 9693 Textiles - Fabrics - Determination of drapery.
