Fabric Width

Woven fabric analysis studies are carried out in order to determine certain criteria in order to determine the usage characteristics of any woven fabric. After determining these properties which are expressed as the parameters of the fabric, the production of the fabric starts after the other necessary weaving production calculations are made.

In order to reproduce a woven fabric with the same properties, fabric analyzes are needed. In this way, the information obtained by analysis is reflected to the production machines and necessary adjustments and arrangements are made before starting production. Accuracy of fabric analysis is very important in terms of the desired properties of the fabric produced at the beginning.

The properties of a woven fabric are determined by the following parameters: weave knitting, density of weft and warps, type and number of weft yarns, crimp ratios of weft and warps, fabric unit weight, color of fabric, fiber properties and the like. Measuring the width of the fabric is among these parameters.

The width of the fabric is the distance from one side of the fabric to the other. Fabric width measurement is made perpendicular to the fabric edge and generally does not take into account the edge area. When measuring, the fabric must be laid flat on the counter, free from wrinkles or creases, and laid out in such a way that it is not taut.

For physical tests performed in accredited laboratories, standards issued by local and foreign organizations are complied with. In this context, the following standards are used in determining the fabric width:

  • TS EN 1773 Textiles - Fabrics - Determination of width and length
  • ISO 3932 Textile - Woven fabrics - Measuring the width of parts
  • ASTM D3774 Standard Test Method for Textile Fabric Width

The laboratories that will determine the fabric width must be accredited from national or international foreign organizations in accordance with the standards of TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 General Conditions for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories. At the same time, it is necessary to have a strong infrastructure and an experienced and trained staff.
