Tensile Strength - Strip

The purpose of testing textile products is to find out how durable it is. The most important point affecting the strength in terms of durability and quality is the structure of the fabric and the strength of the fibers used. Tensile strength tests are applied to woven fabrics in order to determine this strength. Essentially, these tests are carried out in two ways: grap and strip.

In textile products, the fabric will be exposed to cleaning, light and other factors throughout its lifetime and the performance of the fabric will gradually degrade over time. It is therefore important that the fabric has a certain strength to provide an acceptable level of satisfaction over its possible life.

For this purpose, various strength tests in laboratories are carried out in accordance with the standards published by domestic and foreign organizations. The standards used in strip tests are as follows:

  • TS EN ISO 13934-1 Textiles - Tensile properties of fabrics - Part 1: Determination of maximum force and length elongation under maximum force by strip method
  • TS EN 29073-3 Textile - Test methods for nonwoven products - Part 3: Determination of tensile strength and elongation
  • ASTM D5035 Standard test method for tensile strength and elongation of textile fabrics (strip method)

The tensile strength of a fabric is its resistance to a load applied in the weft or warp direction. These tests are applied in order to determine whether a fabric to be used especially in daily garment has suitable properties. The strength of the yarn in the free state is weaker than the strength of the yarn that has become fabric. Because when weaving, the weft threads bind the warp threads and this increases the strength.

In strip tests, the short edges of the fabric sample are fully gripped by the jaws of the drawing device and the tensile strength is measured. The break time is the time after the test is started until the maximum force at which the break is achieved is reached.
