Width Measurement

Weaving is a textile process which consists of crossing operation of two yarn systems by forming a right angle according to certain criteria. The long yarns along the fabric forming the weaving are called warp and the width of the fabric is called weft. In the fabric of a fabric, the warp yarns are located parallel to each other along the fabric side by side and a certain number. The weft threads extend transversely between the warp threads. In the weaving, each of the warp yarns forms a connection by passing over one weft thread.

Before a fabric is produced, the fabric must be designed and the production planned. The design of the fabric depends on the determination of the various properties of the fabric to be produced in accordance with the intended use. These processes are called physical analysis of the fabric. In this context, the qualities that should be present in the fabric can be listed as follows: strength, ie durability, flexibility, ie extensibility, softness or stiffness, appearance, ie properties of the fabric, pattern, color and brightness, keeping it warm, moisture shrinkage, flowing, permeability, drawbacks and other features. In addition to these, other physical properties such as ironing, stitching, dirt-repellent, washable, chemical resistant properties of the fabric are also sought.

The fulfillment of all these properties expected of a fabric naturally depends on the type of raw material, yarn type, fabric weave, yarn densities, fabric thickness, weight of the fabric and finally the dimensions of the fabric.

The width and length of the fabric is a property decided before production and varies according to the area of use. For example, cotton fabrics are generally woven 70 and 90 cm, and woolen fabrics are woven 140 and 150 cm.

For physical tests performed in authorized laboratories, standards published by local and foreign organizations are complied with. The standards considered in this context are:

  • TS EN 1773 Textiles - Fabrics - Determination of width and length
  • ISO 3932 Textile - Woven fabrics - Measuring the width of parts
  • ASTM D3774 Standard Test Method for Textile Fabric Width
