Wear strength
The ability of fabrics used in garment to resist aging and abrasion on the surface of the fabric due to rubbing of yarns and fibers as a result of rubbing against another material is called abrasion resistance, abrasion resistance or aprulation. This is particularly the case for woven fabrics. Abrasion resistance is one of the most important properties that determine the strength of textile products together with the tensile strength.
The touching methods of the fabrics and the properties of the yarns used in the texture affect the abrasion resistance. For example, fabrics such as satin and brocade can be easily roughened by friction. Soft fluffy fabrics and pile fabrics also wear easily. Measuring the abrasion resistance of textile products is not an easy task. The fiber and yarn properties of the fabric as well as the amount of chemicals left on the fabric are among the factors affecting the wear.
For physical tests performed in accredited laboratories, standards issued by local and foreign organizations are complied with. Wear resistance tests are based on the following standards:
- TS EN ISO 12947-1 Textile - Determination of abrasion resistance of fabrics by Martindale method - Part 1: Martindale abrasion tester
- TS EN ISO 12947-2 Textile - Determination of abrasion resistance of fabrics by Martindale method - Part 2: Determination of sample breakage
- TS EN ISO 12947-3 Textile - Determination of abrasion resistance of fabrics by Martindale method - Part 3: Determination of mass loss
- TS EN ISO 12947-4 Textile - Determination of abrasion resistance of fabrics by Martindale method - Part 4: Evaluation of change in appearance
- TS EN 530 Abrasion resistance of protective clothing materials - Test methods
- ASTM Standard test method for wear resistance of D4966 textile fabrics (Martindale abrasion test method)
- ASTM D4970 Standard Test Method for Pilling Resistance of Textile Fabrics and Other Related Surface Changes: Martindale tester
- BS 5690 Method of determination of abrasion resistance of fabrics
