Determination of water content

If the cosmetic products are applied to the surface of the skin for a long time and frequently, both the moisture and heat activities of the skin are affected. Therefore, both cosmetic use and toxicological tests are performed on cosmetic products in order to detect unwanted side effects and ensure safety. According to the results of this test, the structure of the active substance of the cosmetic, its effect on the organism, the frequency of application and the place of application are determined.

Dermatological and toxicological tests are performed on the materials used in the production of cosmetics and finished products. This is the only way to determine the actual side effects of the product. These tests also show the amount of allergy and sensitivity reactions caused by cosmetic products.

When formulating cosmetic products, it is aimed to preserve all of its properties within the period from production to consumption. This period is normally 12 months, the maximum 2 years. The water content of the products is therefore also important. In the meantime, stability studies are carried out to determine the changes in the effect and structure of cosmetic products that will emerge over time.

Water content analysis of cosmetic products is also carried out by authorized laboratories within the scope of physical and chemical analyzes. In this analysis, laboratories comply with both the current legal regulations and the standards published by domestic and foreign organizations. A standard based on these analyzes is the TS 4811 Skin Cream standard. This standard includes creams containing different amounts of oil and water, sometimes containing antibacterial or antioxidant and used for general purposes. However, creams containing a therapeutic active ingredient such as antiseptic or antibiotic are not included in this standard.

In order to carry out such analyzes, laboratories must be accredited from one of the national or international accreditation bodies in accordance with TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories.
