Determination of Nonionic Active Substance
Determination of Nonionic Active Substance

The directive 73 / 404 / EEC on the approximation of the laws of the Member States concerning the methods of testing the biodegradability of nonionic surfactants (surface active substances) issued by the European Union was subsequently revised by the 82 / 242 / EEC.

In this context, a communiqué numbered TSHGM 2005 / 1 regarding the Biodegradability Ratio of Anionic, Nonionic, Ampholytic, Cationic Surfactants and Biodegradability Ratio of Anionic and Nonionic Surfactants in Detergents has been published. This Communiqué states that the rate of biodegradability will be determined by one of the following methods:

  • OECD method (recommended method for determination of biodegradability of surfactants used in detergents)
  • German method (Regulation on degradability of anionic and nonionic surfactants for detergents and cleaning agents)
  • French method (T 73-270 Test Standard published by AFNOR, French Standard Institution)
  • English method (Porous Pot Test described by Water Research Center)

Tests for the determination of nonionic surfactants are carried out by the Bismuth Active Substance (BIAS) method in accordance with the analytical procedure set out in the aforementioned annex. For nonionic surfactants that do not respond to this test, or if it is deemed necessary with concern for efficacy and accuracy, different analyzes are also performed.

Nonionic active agents are a composition which has a very strong soil removal cavity than other materials and is therefore very costly. It is used in many areas. It plays a very effective role in cleaning very oily areas.

Accredited laboratories, which are accredited in accordance with the TS EN ISO / IEC 17025 General Requirements for the Qualification of Testing and Calibration Laboratories, also perform nonionic active substance analysis within the scope of the basic physical and chemical analyzes. These laboratories have technological infrastructure and strong staff in terms of quality and reliability of tests.
