Vibrio bacteria are the most common bacteria in surface waters all over the world. Many vibrio species suffer from human health. For example,

  • Vibrio cholerae bacteria (01 and 0139 species) cause epidemic and pandemic cholera and diarrhea.
  • Vibrio cholerae bacteria (other than 01 and 0139) cause cholera-like disease, moderate diarrhea, and rarely extra-intestinal infections.
  • Bacteria of the genus Vibrio parahaemolyticus cause gastrointestinal infections.
  • Bacteria of the genus Vibrio vulnificus also cause gastrointestinal and wound infections.
  • Vibrio mimicus, vibrio hollisae and vibrio flavialis bacteria cause diarrhea.
  • Vibrio alginolyticus and vibrio damsale bacteria cause eye, ear and wound infections.

Of these non-spore aerobic and mobile bacteria, vibrio cholerae species cause disease only in humans. For the development of the disease, it is necessary to take at least 10 thousand microorganisms since it is taken together with foods over 10 billion when taken with water. Because foods buffer acid.

Vibrio bacteria species are commonly found in stagnant waters, rivers and seas. Mostly in the shells.

There are several advanced test methods for detecting Vibrio bacteria. In the laboratories, studies are carried out to search for vibrio bacteria among microbiological analyzes. These studies are based on standards published by domestic and foreign organizations. The standards considered in this regard are:

  • ISO / TS 21872-1 Microbiology of food and animal feeds - Potentially enteropathogenic vibrio species - Part 1: Identification of vibrio parahaemolyticus and vibrio cholerae bacteria
  • ISO / TS 21872-2 Microbiology of food and animal feed - Potentially enteropathogenic vibrio species - Part 2: Detection of bacterial species other than vibrio parahaemolyticus and vibrio cholerae
