Determination of Pesticide (GC, GC-MS, GC-MS / MS)
Determination of Pesticide (GC, GC-MS, GC-MS / MS)

Even on a papyrus dating back to years before Christ, it was found that some medicines were prepared to combat lice, fleas and wasps. So combating pests is not a new topic. It is known that inorganic pesticides were used in the nineteenth century. In 1940 years, organic chemistry was used in pesticide production. DDT is the most recognized pesticide in this regard. Today, around the world, around 2 million tons of pesticides are used annually. This figure is increasing day by day.

However, too much and unconsciously using pesticides, pesticides or residues can remain in the soil, water and air and in the food produced. Meanwhile, other non-target organisms and humans suffer. First of all, when the chlorinated pesticide residues were found in the human body at the beginning of the 1950s, the importance of pesticides and their residues began to be emphasized.

While some pesticides do not cause any poisoning, some pesticides affect the nervous system, cause cancer and even cause mutation. The main source of pesticide residues is food. For this reason, the Codex Committee for Pesticide Residues was established in 1960 and pesticides were identified and based on scientific research data and the highest residual values allowed in foods were determined. In our country, the highest permissible values of pesticides used in agricultural production are included in the legal regulations.

Many methods are used to determine the amount of pesticide in foods. Some of the most preferred are:

  • GC (Gas Chromatography)
  • GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectroscopy)
  • GC-MS / MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass - Mass Spectrometer)

In laboratories, determination of pesticide in fruits and vegetables is carried out. In addition, the standards prepared by organizations operating in our country and in foreign countries and the methods of analysis and test criteria accepted in the world are complied with.
