Mineral oil is a non-vegetable oil product, which is composed of a mixture of light alkenes. This oil is defined as liquid paraffin. Baby oil is actually liquid paraffin, which is added to the perfume. Creams and skin care creams used under the eyes in the cosmetic industry are produced with mineral oil. Mineral oil is very cheap to obtain a wide range of uses.

In the food sector, in some foods, mineral oil is included in sweetening and brightening additives. Mineral oil is more preferred in confectionery products. This is the mineral oil that makes the products appear brighter and luminous, especially in fast food restaurants. Liquid is applied to food products using paraffin spray and makes them appear bright.

Other forms of use of mineral oil are to make salad bowls, wooden cutting boards and serving dishes look bright. Since it does not taste and smell, the preferred mineral oil also prevents bacterial growth.

Paraffins, which are included in food products as additives with the code E905, are accepted as dangerous additives for human health.

The mineral oil obtained by refining crude oil is classified as low, weak or good according to the refining method. Mineral oils classified as low or weak are considered to be carcinogenic substances. These are mostly used in the industrial sector. Highly refined mineral oils are not carcinogenic. These are mostly used in cosmetics. Although mineral oils in this group are not harmful to humans in the researches, the researches are not sufficient.

Mineral oil analyzes are also carried out in authorized laboratories within the scope of chemical tests. In these studies, standards, test methods and test criteria published by domestic and foreign organizations are followed.
