Dioxin and dioxin-like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are formed in nature as a result of bioaccumulation and cause contamination in various foods and feeds through the food chain. These are chemical compounds with high toxicity properties. Dioxins are a common name given to two large chemical groups, dioxins and furans, which have similar structure but contain different amounts of chlorine. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are similar chemical compounds but have different levels of chlorine in their structure. Because chlorine is bound in different positions, 75 dioxin and 135 furan emerge. But all of them are found in similar fatty foods and have similar poisoning properties.

Dioxins and furans are formed by the incineration of industrial, medical or domestic waste containing chlorine. Dioxins are also found in fires, factory emissions, exhaust gases and building insulation materials. In this way, it causes air pollution, particle accumulation in soil and plants and contamination of surface water.

Unlike dioxins, PCBs are not formed by combustion. The chemicals commonly used in some industrial applications are dyes, polymers and chemicals found in mineral oils. The use of PCBs is prohibited in developed countries, but because of their durability, environmental pollution continues.

Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs inevitably cause contamination in the food and feed chain. Contamination of meat and milk from animals fed with these feeds is encountered. These substances cause various health problems in humans.
