Determination of Boron

Boron is an important plant nutrition element. However, if the irrigation water contains more than 2 mg / l, the plants are damaged. For some plants, even boron concentrations less than 1 mg / l are harmful. The amount of boron present in drinking water is essentially not greater than 1 mg / l.

Boron, which is naturally present in water at very low values, is mixed with surface wastes and groundwater along with domestic wastewater because they are found in the structure of industrial wastewater or cleaning materials. The boron content in seawater is 5 mg / l. If high amounts of boron are taken into the body, the central nervous system is affected.

Borax is the most widely used type of boron and has been recognized for thousands of years. Our country is among five countries in the world in terms of boron ores.

Boron content in soils is generally low. Plants do not need this element more. Plants only benefit from 5 of boron in the soil. Boron affects the metabolism of plants and is involved in cell division. It is also necessary for protein synthesis. It supports the attitude of flowers and fruits, hormone formation and the passage of sugar through the cell wall.

Boron deficiency occurs in more dry conditions and over fertilized dry soils. In case of boron deficiency, yellowing of leaf tips and decreases in seed and fruit set. Fruits and vegetables become small and formless. Leaf and stem surface cracks occur. Boron excess in plants has poisoning effect.

Different methods are used to determine the amount of boron that will be beneficial to the plant in the soil. The most commonly used method is the determination of hot water extractable boron. Carmine solution is added to the prepared soil extract and the resulting color density is read on the spectrophotometer to determine the amount of boron.

In the laboratories, boron determination studies are carried out within the scope of chemical tests. During these studies, the standards issued by domestic and foreign organizations are complied with.
