dissolved Oxygen determination

Determination of Dissolved Oxygen
Determination of Dissolved Oxygen

The dissolved oxygen level in natural water and wastewater depends on the chemical, physical and biochemical activities taking place in the water environment. Dissolved oxygen analysis is generally applied in water pollution control studies and wastewater treatment plants. Two methods are commonly used in these studies: Winkler or iodometric methods or electrometric methods using membrane electrodes.

The Winkler or iodometric method is a titrimetric method based primarily on the oxidation property of dissolved oxygen. The electrometric method using membrane electrodes is based on the rate at which molecular oxygen diffuses across the membrane. One of these methods is preferred, depending on the expected degree of sensitivity, or on existing interventions or laboratory facilities.

Dissolved oxygen measurements carried out under the supervision of trained and experienced employees in accredited laboratories indicate that the waters are aerobic or anaerobic and how sustainable living life is in natural waters. In addition, biochemical oxygen demand of water is determined by these analyzes.

In addition, dissolved oxygen measurements determine the concentration of oxygen in activated sludge tanks used in wastewater applications and determine the quality of the tanks and the speed of the treatment process.

In addition to the dissolved oxygen measurements, pH values, conductivity and salinity analyzes of the water have also been carried out and the effects of the obtained values on the plants and living organisms have been examined.

In terms of the reliability and impartiality of the analysis results, laboratories follow scientific researches and comply with the standards issued by domestic and foreign organizations. Dissolved oxygen determination analysis is based on the following standard:

  • TS EN ISO 5814 Water quality - Determination of dissolved oxygen - Electrochemical probe method

This standard covers an electrochemical method for detecting dissolved oxygen in water using an electrochemical cell isolated from a water sample with a gas permeable membrane.
