Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison Group (DSP) YTXs (Sulfated Compounds) (LC-MS / MS)

Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison Group (DSP) is defined as diarrhea, ie, shellfish poisons that cause diarrhea. These poisoning toxins include pecotoxin produced by ocadaic acid group toxins and dinophysis species, as well as yessotoxin produced by prorocentrum algae species. These toxins cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and convulsions in humans.

In recent years, many legal regulations have been made on food safety in the European Union. In 2008, a hygiene package was adopted and put into practice, combining the following directives based on food law 178 / 2002 / EC:

·         Directive 852 / 2004 / EC on the hygiene of foodstuffs

·         Directive 853 / 2004 / EC on the hygiene of foodstuffs of animal origin

·         Directive 854 / 2004 / EC for the official inspection of foodstuffs of animal origin suitable for human consumption

·         Directive for verification of compliance with feed and food law, animal health and animal welfare rules 882 / 2004 / EC

As is known, most of the food-borne risks are in animal foods. These directives include hygiene issues for the processing and supply of animal foods and the control of animal diseases.

Recently, with the amendment to Directive 853 / 2004, which sets out special rules for hygiene of food, the upper limit of the permitted amount of yessotoxin in live bivalve animals, 1 mg / kg, has been increased to 3.75 mg / kg.

Biotoxin analysis in advanced laboratories, LC-MS / MS method and Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison Group (DSP) intoxication analysis among the YTX (sulfated compounds) are also analyzed. Mainly, the analyzes conducted within this scope focus on the following studies:

  • Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison Group (DSP) - Yesso Toxin (YTX)
  • Diarrhetic Shellfish Poison Group (DSP) - Homo Yesso Toxin (hYTX)

In these analyzes, the standard considered is:

  • TS EN 16204 Foodstuffs - Determination of lipophilic algae toxins in shellfish and shellfish by LC-MS / MS (octadaic acid toxins, yessotoxins, azaspiracids, pectonotoxins)
