One of the innovations in packaging technology in terms of food safety is edible, biodegradable film and packaging. Edible and renewable films and packaging are becoming more and more important with increasing sensitivity to environmental problems, with increasing natural resources and increasing demand for high nutritional products. With this new method, more accurate results are obtained against gas passage, moisture passage and oil and fat migration in packages.

The major advantage of edible packaging materials is that they can be consumed together with the foodstuff. This increases the nutritional value of the food and makes the food more appealing to the senses. It also allows easier packaging of foodstuffs in small pieces. In the meantime, edible packages serve to transport antimicrobial and antioxidant agents and control their spread.

In recent years, nanotechnology applications have started to be used in food packaging sector. In this way, packaging properties have been improved by the use of nanoscale materials. Thanks to this technology, more gas barrier, more elastic structure, more impact resistant structure, tension properties and thermal properties are improved.

The Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock published the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Food and Plastic Materials in Contact with Food (Communiqué no: 2013 / 2013) in 34. In the annexes of this Communiqué, it is permitted to use vegetable oil simulant for the determination of the total migration and specific migration amounts of some plastic packaging materials used in the packaging of fatty foods.

Total migration analysis of reusable materials is an important issue in packaging studies in food sector. Within the scope of packaging analysis in advanced laboratories, total migration analyzes are carried out using vegetable oil simulant in reusable products. These analyzes are based on standards and test methods published by national and international organizations.
