In the food industry, packaging is one of the most important processes that ensure the storage of food products under appropriate conditions, prolong shelf life, protect against contaminants and, most importantly, ensure hygiene and product safety. In parallel with technological developments, packaging applications are developing and different packaging materials and technologies are used for different food products. In this way, foodstuffs are protected from possible physical, chemical and microbiological risks, and the quality and freshness of the products are maintained for a long time, and their shelf life is extended. The choice of packaging that is not suitable for foodstuffs is also a threat to human health.

Polymers, paper, cardboard, wood, glass, and remanufactured cellulose, rubber and similar components are used as packaging materials, while metals are also found to be of significant use.

The characteristics and certain conditions of the packaging materials in contact with food are determined by the relevant legal regulations. There are two basic regulations on this subject, issued by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock in 2013. These:

  • Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on plastics and materials in contact with food (Communiqué no: 2013 / 34)
  • Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on List of Similar Foods Used in Migration Test of Components of Plastic Materials and Materials in Contact with Food (Communiqué no: 2013 / 35)

Packaging enterprises must comply with the existing legal regulations and limitations in this regard.

Titrimetric methods are based on measuring the amount of a solution of known concentration that reacts with the analyte. These methods are very broad and effective quantitative analysis methods. Within the scope of packaging analysis in advanced laboratories, total heavy metal analysis in lead additives in food additives packages is determined by titrimetric methods. These analyzes are based on standards and test methods published by national and international organizations.
