Seismic Testing Laboratory

In the event of any seismic or natural disaster, it is necessary to ensure that critical electrical, electromechanical and mechanical equipment systems react in a safe and controlled manner. Seismic testing and certification services provided by advanced laboratories are important to ensure that safety-critical systems and components continue to operate under the most demanding vibration conditions without loss of function.

In the laboratories, an earthquake environment is created with earthquake simulation devices and seismic vibration tests are performed. A three-axis shaker table and a wide range of vibration and shock testers are used. In this way, the most severe seismic conditions that an equipment may be exposed to during an earthquake are repeated.

The seismic testing laboratories mainly perform the following tests: test plan and strategy formation, fixture design, research test, single-axis test, dual-axis test, three-axis earthquake test and qualification documents.

Today, seismic testing laboratories are expanding their seismic testing capabilities at all levels, from small to large laboratories. Thanks to these capabilities, laboratories investigate and measure the effects of forces associated with seismic events on structures and equipment within it, thus ensuring product reliability and improving survival safety if a seismic event occurs.

For example, some of the seismic agitation tables are uniaxial and perform agitation on a linear axis that can be moved in one direction. On the other hand, multi-axis rocking tables are also used in the tests. These are multi-axis tables that can move up to six degrees.

Laboratory tests are carried out in accordance with a wide range of current test standards described by domestic and foreign organizations. We also customize some testing services to meet customer needs. The main standards used in these studies are:

  • IEEE 693-2018 IEEE designed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the recommended application standard for IEEE substation seismic design. This standard includes seismic design recommendations for substations, including qualification of different equipment. These recommendations include seismic criteria, qualification methods and levels, structural capacities, performance requirements for equipment operation, assembly methods and documentation.
  • Network equipment - NEBS GR-63-CORE standard designed under the building system (NEBS). NEBS refers to the test family applicable to telecommunications equipment. The two most common tests are the GR-63-CORE physical protection test and the GR-1089-CORE EMC and electrical safety test.
  • AC156 designed by the International Code Council Assessment Service ICC ES) Standard for seismic certification by agitation table testing of non-structural components.

Apart from these, there are many more standards.

In recent years, the greatest impact on the development of building codes has been the observation of the behavior of real buildings during an earthquake. Seismic testing in advanced seismic testing laboratories mainly includes:

  • To define the scope of the project and to prepare a seismic test plan
  • To design and manufacture any special equipment required for testing
  • To make all necessary seismic analyzes
  • Complete the required shaking table test in accordance with AC-156 and special seismic certification preliminary standards
  • To document the seismic capabilities of the equipment or structure
  • Provide product labels for conformity certificates and codes
  • Prepare all required documents and present final report

EUROLAB also provides seismic test laboratory services within the scope of numerous laboratory services. Thanks to these tests, enterprises receive more efficient, high performance and quality testing services and provide safe, fast and uninterrupted service to their customers.

In addition to the seismic test laboratory services provided within the scope of laboratory services, EUROLAB also provides other testing services.
