Flue Gas (Emission) Measurement
Flue Gas (Emission) Measurement

The most striking of the emission measurements is the flue gas emission measurements. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has issued a Regulation on the Control of Industrial Air Pollution. The purpose of this regulation is to control emissions in the form of soot, smoke, gas, steam, dust and aerosol that are emitted to the air during the activities of industrial and power generation facilities. At the same time, it is aimed to protect the people and their environment against the dangers arising from the pollution, to eliminate the negative effects that cause harm to the environment due to air pollution and to prevent these effects from occurring.

According to the principles of the regulation, it is the responsibility of the enterprises to perform flue gas emission measurements in accordance with the principles and criteria specified in the regulation. Emissions emitting outside the chimney are also required to determine hourly mass flow rates using the necessary calculation methods.

This responsibility applies not only to the existing enterprises but also to the newly established enterprises.

The limit values and the principles to be followed for the enterprises subject to emission authorization are given in the annex of the said regulation.

In the emission measurements, CO (carbon monoxide), CO2 (carbon dioxide), O2 (oxygen), SO2 (sulfur dioxide), NO (nitric oxide) and NO2 (nitrogen endoxide) values are measured in flue gas.

National and international standards as well as legal regulations are taken into consideration in the measurement works carried out in the authorized laboratories. Here are a few of them:

  • For determination of CO, O2, CO2: TS ISO 12039 Stationary Welding Emissions Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide and Oxygen Determination - Performance Characteristics and Calibration of Automatic Measuring Systems
  • For the determination of SO2: TS ISO 7935 Spot Welding Emissions: Determination of the Mass Concentration of Sulfur Dioxide - Performance Characteristics of Automatic Measurement Methods
  • For NOx, NO, NO2 determination: EPA CTM 022 Determination of Nitric Oxide, Nitrogen Dioxide and NOx Emissions From Stationary Combustion Sources By Electrochemical Analyzer
